IRS CP2000 Notice Analysis

A calm, plain-English read of what that IRS letter actually says — and what to do next.

A CP2000 is not an audit. It's an automated mismatch notice — millions go out every year, and most are resolved with a single response. Upload yours. We'll walk you through it.

First — take a breath

This is a common notice, not an audit.

If you just opened a CP2000, your pulse is probably up. Here's what's actually going on, before you read another word.

It's automated, not personal

A CP2000 is generated when income reported to the IRS by a third party (a broker, employer, or payment processor) doesn't match what was reported on your return. A computer flagged it. No human chose you.

The 30 days is workable

You have 30 days to respond from the date on the notice — and if you need more time, you can call the number on the letter and request a 30-day extension. It's routinely granted.

The proposed amount is a proposal

The dollar figure in the notice is what the IRS thinks you might owe if their assumptions are correct. Often they aren't. There are three response paths — agree, disagree, or partially agree.

Questions

What people usually want to know before they buy.

Is this tax advice?
No — and this is important. CP2000Clarity is a document analysis service. We explain, in plain English, what your notice says, what commonly causes this type of discrepancy, and what your response options are. We are not a CPA firm, a tax preparation service, or a law firm. For advice on your specific tax situation — especially if the proposed amount is significant or involves crypto, K-1s, or foreign income — consult a licensed CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney.
Is a CP2000 an audit?
No. A CP2000 is an automated underreporter notice. The IRS's computers compared the income reported on your return against income reported to them by third parties (employers, brokers, banks, payment processors) and found a mismatch. It is not a formal audit, and most CP2000 notices are resolved with a single response — either agreeing, disagreeing with documentation, or partially agreeing.
How long until I get my report?
Most reports are delivered within about ten minutes of upload. In rare cases where the notice is long or unusually complex, it may take up to 30 minutes. You'll receive it by email. If more than an hour passes, reply to your purchase confirmation and we'll take a look.
What if I miss the 30-day deadline?
If you don't respond within 30 days, the IRS typically issues a CP3219A (Statutory Notice of Deficiency), which gives you another 90 days to petition the U.S. Tax Court. If you need more time before the 30 days is up, you can call the number on your notice and request a 30-day extension — this is routinely granted. The report explains the full escalation timeline.
Do I need to create an account?
No account, no password, no portal. You pay through Stripe, upload your notice through a secure form, and receive your report by email. That's the whole thing.
Is my notice kept confidential?
Your upload is processed securely and isn't retained after your report is generated. We don't sell or share your data, and no human at CP2000Clarity reads your notice — the analysis is generated automatically.
Should I still talk to a tax professional?
Often, yes — and our report will tell you when it's worth doing. If the proposed amount exceeds a few thousand dollars, if an accuracy-related penalty was proposed, or if the discrepancy involves crypto, K-1s, partnership income, or foreign accounts, getting a CPA or enrolled agent involved before you respond is usually a smart call. The report gives you a set of specific questions to bring to that conversation.
